Educating Me Softly
It is often claimed that students nowadays don’t know what respect and discipline mean anymore. Students who eat, chat or sleep during class aren’t exceptions and we have all heard stories about teachers who even were attacked by their students. What are teachers supposed to do? Is there a way to reprimand those disrespectful troublemakers without resorting to outdated, violent methods like hitting impudent students with a stick?
Some people might claim that physical punishment is the only solution. Children have to be afraid of their teachers, otherwise they would never learn how to behave correctly. In former times students didn’t behave like today because they were afraid of getting physically punished, if they didn’t listen. But is fear and violence the right atmosphere to learn, to be creative and to develop? Probably not.
Even though the prohibition of violence as a means of education definitely is a good thing, it is still a fact that teachers somehow need to have authority and be respected. As most students usually don’t work as they are supposed to without any rules and pressure, education obviously requires some sort of punishment to create and keep discipline. At the same time teachers should also try to make their lessons as interesting and motivating as possible to make students learn not only for fear of punishments.
So teachers should try to strike a balance between disciplining their students, for example by putting them in detention if they behave inappropriately, and at the same time having a trustful relationship with their students, without the use of fear and violence, but by encouragement and respect for each other.
