European Stereotypes

As the European crisis ratchets up antagonism between countries, there has been a rise in name-calling and finger-pointing: from lazy southerners to domineering northerners, with plenty in between. And that’s before the football starts this summer. The six newspapers in the Europa project were asked to stereotype each other, and then asked cultural commentators in each country to assess how accurate they are

HW Stoned Students

Study the following sonnet and look up the linked words. If you don’t understand the English definition look up the word/phrase at PONS.

You tell them (erkennen an) by their wobbling zigzag stride —
They stagger into class for one half-hour,
Head down and collar up, so as to hide
The fact that eyes are glazed and breath is sour.

HW Facebook’s Friendship Trap

Study this text and look up and learn the bold words. Look up words at termly or Linguee, the OALD does not work at the moment.

Here’s the original text.

mp3DirectCut

… ist ein ausgezeichnetes, kostenloses Tool um MP3-Dateien direkt zu bearbeiten. Ich benutze das Programm zum Beispiel um Hörverstehenstexte zu bearbeiten und um ein Musikstück für eine Sport- oder Tanzvorführung an einer bestimmten Stelle zu schneiden.

HW SPIEGEL ONLINE

Go to the Germany section of SPIEGEL ONLINE and choose an interesting article. If none of the current articles interests you, go to the archive.

Print out your article and prepare a short talk about it. Practise until you can speak fluently WITHOUT ANY NOTES.

Variatio motus delectat

… bedeutet „Die Vielfalt der Bewegung erfreut“. Dieses Motto sollte m.E. nicht nur für den Sportunterricht des einzelnen Lehrers gelten, sondern auch für den gesamten Sportunterricht an einer Schule.

HW Be Wonderful and Wise

Go to the Englisch Blog, watch the amazing video and learn the given words.

If you aren’t absolutely sure how to pronounce e.g. „blanch“ and „braise“ correctly (and I KNOW that you aren’t ;-)) look them up in the OALD.

PS. The video is a great opportunity to practise your knowledge of film analysis (pdf).

How to Focus in the Age of Distraction

… ist der Titel einer ganz witzigen Mindmap-Grafik.  (Tipp von Max Müller bzw. Martina Baasner)

HW The Story of an Hour

Read this „webtext“, click on the red passages, study the notes
and try to answer the questions orally. If there are any words you don’t know, look them up as usual at PONS and/or the OALD.

***** End of HW ****

If you like, you may click on „Student discussion after first reading of the story“ at the bottom of the page. There are several „student responses“ of varying quality.
