If it\u2019s a lite\u00adra\u00adry text your aim should be to under\u00adstand the plot <em>(Hand\u00adlung<\/em>) of the sto\u00adry.&nbsp;You should ask yours\u00adelf ques\u00adti\u00adons like: What is it all about? How is the text struc\u00adtu\u00adred? What is the writer\u2019s atti\u00adtu\u00adde towards his topic? What are his main argu\u00adments? <!--more-->In a non-fic\u00adtion text (<em>Sach\u00adtext<\/em>) you should ana\u00adly\u00adse espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly the first (= topic) sen\u00adtence of each para\u00adgraph and men\u00adtal\u00adly summa\u00adrize each para\u00adgraph in your own words. During the first rea\u00adding you should look up only words that are abso\u00adlut\u00ade\u00adly neces\u00adsa\u00adry for under\u00adstan\u00adding. Igno\u00adre all other words like e.g. descrip\u00adti\u00adve (<em>beschrei\u00adbend<\/em>) adjec\u00adti\u00adves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second rea\u00adding<\/strong>: During the second rea\u00adding you should try to under\u00adstand also passages\/details that you did not real\u00adly grasp (<em>erfas\u00adsen<\/em>) the first time. In addi\u00adti\u00adon you should look up ALL the words you do not know or whe\u00adre you are not abso\u00adlut\u00ade\u00adly sure what they mean in the given context.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ana\u00adly\u00adsis<\/strong>: The next step is to read ALL the ques\u00adti\u00adons at least TWICE. Then you exami\u00adne which para\u00adgraph(s) or passage(s) each ques\u00adti\u00adon refers to. Ana\u00adly\u00adse ALL the ques\u00adti\u00adons first befo\u00adre you start ans\u00adwe\u00adring any of them. Nor\u00admal\u00adly you can assu\u00adme (<em>davon aus\u00adge\u00adhen<\/em>) that ques\u00adti\u00adons are asked in chro\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal order, i.e. the first ques\u00adti\u00adon refers to the first (or the first two) paragraph(s), the second ques\u00adti\u00adon to the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing paragraph(s) etc. That is why it would be rather unu\u00adsu\u00adal if the third ques\u00adti\u00adon refers to the first two para\u00adgraphs, whe\u00adre\u00adas the first ques\u00adti\u00adon refers to the third and fourth para\u00adgraph. Look out espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly for key\u00adwords in the first sen\u00adtence of a para\u00adgraph (= topic sentence).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over\u00adlap\u00adping<\/strong>: Ques\u00adti\u00adons nor\u00admal\u00adly do not over\u00adlap (<em>sich \u00fcber\u00adschnei\u00adden<\/em>). Look and think again care\u00adfully when you are about to wri\u00adte the same in two dif\u00adfe\u00adrent ans\u00adwers. It may hap\u00adpen that two ques\u00adti\u00adons refer to the same passage(s) but almost always they dri\u00adve at (<em>abzie\u00adlen auf<\/em>) dif\u00adfe\u00adrent aspects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>: Note your results eit\u00adher on extra note-paper or use e.g. a wavy line in the mar\u00adgin tog\u00ade\u00adther with the cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00adding num\u00adber of the ques\u00adti\u00adon. Lea\u00adve enough space on your note-paper so that you can easi\u00adly add some\u00adthing later&nbsp;on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High\u00adlight\u00ading<\/strong>: Keep in mind that you can\u00adnot undo (<em>r\u00fcck\u00adg\u00e4n\u00adgig machen<\/em>) wrong high\u00adlight\u00ading. High\u00adlight only key words and\/or pas\u00adsa\u00adges, do not was\u00adte pre\u00adcious time by high\u00adlight\u00ading com\u00adple\u00adte para\u00adgraphs. Do NOT high\u00adlight unknown words becau\u00adse they may be com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quo\u00adting vs. para\u00adphra\u00adsing<\/strong>: Keep in mind that you are sup\u00adpo\u00adsed to \u201cuse your own words as far as is <em>appro\u00adpriate<\/em>\u201d (<em>ange\u00admes\u00adsen<\/em>), and NOT \u201cas far as pos\u00adsi\u00adble\u201d. That means that you may, and some\u00adti\u00admes even should quo\u00adte key words and\/or pas\u00adsa\u00adges. Moreo\u00adver you should quo\u00adte when your para\u00adphra\u00adse would be much lon\u00adger and\/or com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adted than the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal pas\u00adsa\u00adge. Try to find Ger\u00adman syn\u00adonyms or para\u00adphra\u00adses and see whe\u00adther you can trans\u00adla\u00adte them into Eng\u00adlish. Do not for\u00adget that your mono\u00adlin\u00adgu\u00adal dic\u00adtion\u00ada\u00adry often offers per\u00adfect syn\u00adonyms and\/or paraphrases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sty\u00adli\u00adstic Devices<\/strong>: Typi\u00adcal\u00adly a ques\u00adti\u00adon asks you to find three \u201crele\u00advant\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jochenlueders.de\/abitur\/stylistic_devices.pdf\">sty\u00adli\u00adstic devices<\/a>&nbsp;(pdf) and \u201cexplain how they work\u201d. Look through the who\u00adle text and note your results grou\u00adped accor\u00adding to the differ\u00adent devices on your note-paper. The four most com\u00admon devices are simi\u00adle, meta\u00adphor, personifica\u00adtion and alli\u00adte\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. Go through your list and choo\u00adse the three best devices. When you have found e.g. seve\u00adral meta\u00adphors you again choo\u00adse the best one.
