4. Prejudice \u2013 the Child of Ignorance<\/h4>\n

Every sto\u00adry\u00adboard needs a sto\u00adry that is why the first step was inven\u00adting one and deci\u00adding how to rea\u00adli\u00adze it later on. The title sta\u00adtes the main mes\u00adsa\u00adge of the sto\u00adry. A young girl\u2019s sur\u00adroun\u00adding does\u00adn\u2019t lis\u00adten to her and has pre\u00adju\u00addi\u00adce against her. That is why they start igno\u00adring her and the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre des\u00adtroy\u00ading her.<\/p>\n

The basis of the sto\u00adry was the idea to invent a short sto\u00adry out of six words. The ori\u00adgi\u00adnal sen\u00adtence for the six-word-sto\u00adry was: \u201eIt can\u2019t be, I\u2019m a vir\u00adgin.\u201c What came out is the tra\u00adgic sto\u00adry of a young girl, who\u00adse life is gover\u00adned by her con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adti\u00adve sur\u00adroun\u00adding. As long as she did ever\u00ady\u00adthing the others expec\u00adted of her, her life was fabu\u00adlous and she had love and sup\u00adport, but in that one decisi\u00adve moment, whe\u00adre she needs true love and sup\u00adport, the truth comes out: Appearan\u00adces are decei\u00adving. At the end she aban\u00addons hers\u00adelf to despair.<\/p>\n

<\/span>4.1. Plot<\/span><\/h4>\n

Han\u00adnah D. lives the ide\u00adal life. She lives in a small town, whe\u00adre ever\u00ady\u00adbo\u00addy knows her. She is going to mar\u00adry her fian\u00adc\u00e9 Lewis \u2013 her big love. Befo\u00adre their wed\u00adding they plan their stag party.<\/p>\n

Han\u00adnah and her fri\u00adends go out in a club near the town. After her fri\u00adends and her danced, she goes to the bar to get some\u00adthing to drink. The\u00adre, a guy starts tal\u00adking to her. She tells him that this is her stag par\u00adty, so he wants to drink on it. She brings her fri\u00adends the drinks and comes back. In the mean\u00adti\u00adme he put in some liquid ecsta\u00adsy. She drinks it and talks for a while. When she starts losing her con\u00adscious\u00adness, he takes her with him. He rapes her and lea\u00adves her in one of the toi\u00adlet cabins.<\/p>\n

After some time Hannah\u2019s fri\u00adends start won\u00adde\u00adring whe\u00adre she is. Man\u00addy, her best fri\u00adend, goes into the toi\u00adlets and finds her, lying on the ground. She thinks it is becau\u00adse she drank too much alco\u00adhol. They deci\u00adde to go home.<\/p>\n

Becau\u00adse of abdo\u00admi\u00adnal pain, Han\u00adnah wants to go to her doc\u00adtor \u2013 two weeks later. After the check\u00adup, the gyneco\u00adlo\u00adgist tells her, that she is pregnant. She can\u2019t belie\u00adve this and says: \u201eIt can\u2019t be I\u2019m a vir\u00adgin.\u201c But she can\u00adnot remem\u00adber what hap\u00adpen\u00aded two weeks ago. After she tal\u00adked to her best fri\u00adend, she goes to her fian\u00adc\u00e9, some days befo\u00adre her wed\u00adding, and tells him ever\u00ady\u00adthing. He thinks she chea\u00adted on him and calls of the wed\u00adding. This is when her night\u00adma\u00adre beg\u00adins. The peo\u00adp\u00adle in town start tal\u00adking about her and igno\u00adring her and her fami\u00adly does\u00adn\u2019t sup\u00adport her and what hurts her the most \u2013 she lost her big love Lewis.<\/p>\n

After a while she starts remem\u00adbe\u00adring, what hap\u00adpen\u00aded to her in that night. She wri\u00adtes it down in a let\u00adter for her best fri\u00adend, but nevert\u00adhel\u00adess kills hers\u00adelf, becau\u00adse she can\u2019t stand this situa\u00adti\u00adon of con\u00adtempt of her fami\u00adly and her fian\u00adc\u00e9. Fur\u00adther\u00admo\u00adre she is sure, that nobo\u00addy would belie\u00adve her. A few hours later Man\u00addy comes to her house and finds her and the let\u00adter. In the let\u00adter it says, just to tell her fian\u00adc\u00e9 the truth about what hap\u00adpen\u00aded. At the fun\u00ade\u00adral Man\u00addy talks to Lewis.<\/p>\n

4.3. Basic Ideas<\/h4>\n

In every film the begin\u00adning has to arou\u00adse the viewer\u2019s atten\u00adti\u00adon, the end has to ful\u00adfil his expec\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons and the\u00adre has to be a key sce\u00adne to make it inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading. That is the reason why the\u00adse three sce\u00adnes were cho\u00adsen in the self-made sto\u00adry\u00adboard, becau\u00adse they are essen\u00adti\u00adal for the deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of the rest of the sto\u00adry. The most important devices, to make the\u00adse three sce\u00adnes inte\u00adres\u00adt\u00ading are two basic ide\u00adas \u2013 the flash\u00adback and the transitions.<\/p>\n

One of the most decisi\u00adve facts of this self-made sto\u00adry\u00adboard is that the who\u00adle film is built on a flash\u00adback. The idea was to crea\u00adte a kind of clo\u00adsure we know from artic\u00adles or com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons, which, at the end, refer to the begin\u00adning. To con\u00advey this fee\u00adling of a com\u00adple\u00adted short sto\u00adry two things can be men\u00adtio\u00adned. On the one hand the\u00adre is the sad and slow melo\u00addy when the slide-show is shown (sce\u00adne 1\/page 1), which is repea\u00adted at the end, when Lewis lea\u00adves the gra\u00advey\u00adard, the came\u00adra focu\u00adses on the lea\u00adve abo\u00adve Hannah\u2019s gra\u00adve and the film ends (sce\u00adne 3\/page 8). On the other hand we have the same set\u00adting. At the begin\u00adning of the film Lewis, visi\u00adting the fun\u00ade\u00adral, intro\u00addu\u00adces the flash\u00adback with the help of the let\u00adter (sce\u00adne 1\/page 6\u20137) and the sto\u00adry ends with him still stan\u00adding at her gra\u00adve. With the\u00adse two fac\u00adtors the view\u00ader gets the impres\u00adsi\u00adon of a sto\u00adry in a sto\u00adry. The film is set at Hannah\u2019s fun\u00ade\u00adral, which is the first sto\u00adry and the let\u00adter sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adzes the flash\u00adback, which repres\u00adents the second story.<\/p>\n

To make the tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adons bet\u00adween intro\u00adduc\u00adtion and sto\u00adry, and, pre\u00adsent and past as flu\u00adent as pos\u00adsi\u00adble, the\u00adre are no simp\u00adle cuts in bet\u00adween. The first tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon was made with the help of the zoom effect. Seve\u00adral pic\u00adtures are shown in the slide-show in black and white, except the last one (sce\u00adne 1\/page 1\u20132). The red rose com\u00adbi\u00adned with the black and white pic\u00adtures crea\u00adtes a rather sad atmo\u00adsphe\u00adre and can be inter\u00adpre\u00adted as fores\u00adha\u00addowing. Becau\u00adse of this dark begin\u00adning, the view\u00ader expects some\u00adthing dra\u00adma\u00adtic. By zoo\u00adming in the red rose, the back\u00adground is left out and the came\u00adra can zoom out in a com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly dif\u00adfe\u00adrent place. In this sto\u00adry\u00adboard the came\u00adra swit\u00adches from pho\u00adto\u00adgraphs to Man\u00addy hol\u00adding the red rose at the fun\u00ade\u00adral (sce\u00adne 1\/page 3).<\/p>\n

The chan\u00adge from pre\u00adsent to past is made with the help of the let\u00adter (sce\u00adne 1\/page 6\u20137), which Lewis reads, but the tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon bet\u00adween flash\u00adback and now, at the end, is not that obvious. When Han\u00adnah dies (sce\u00adne 3\/page 5), the came\u00adra zooms out and flies <\/em>over the hou\u00adses towards the gra\u00advey\u00adard (sce\u00adne 3\/page 6). It is like fly\u00ading through the time. Lewis still stands the\u00adre, like in the begin\u00adning, and has finis\u00adhed rea\u00adding the let\u00adter, that is why the came\u00adra comes back to him and swit\u00adches from past to pre\u00adsent (sce\u00adne 3\/page 6\u20137). Tog\u00ade\u00adther with sound and set\u00adting it helps the view\u00ader to under\u00adstand the tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon and the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre the closure.<\/p>\n

<\/span>4.4. Camera and Scene Analysis<\/span><\/h4>\n

To crea\u00adte sus\u00adpen\u00adse, com\u00adpas\u00adsi\u00adon or other emo\u00adti\u00adons within the view\u00aders all came\u00adra set\u00adtings have to be thought about. The idyl\u00adlic black and white pic\u00adtures in the slide-show (sce\u00adne 1\/page 1) are a strong con\u00adtrast to the fun\u00ade\u00adral, which is in colours (sce\u00adne 1\/page 3). The same can be said about the rose (sce\u00adne 1\/page 2). It has an empha\u00adsi\u00adzing effect and in this com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon reminds us of blood and death.<\/p>\n

Ano\u00adther striking shot is the extre\u00adme clo\u00adse-up, when the doc\u00adtor tells Han\u00adnah that she is pregnant (sce\u00adne 2\/page 4\u20136). After the reac\u00adtion shot on page four, not\u00adhing but the tear is shown. On the one hand it is rather unty\u00adpi\u00adcal not to show the who\u00adle face, so that the view\u00ader can see the reac\u00adtion all the time, but only the tear. On the other hand it sup\u00adports the dra\u00adma\u00adtic effect of the tear rol\u00adling down the face. It ser\u00adves as a kind of tran\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adon to the mouth. The came\u00adra stops here and focu\u00adses on the mouth, when she says that she is a vir\u00adgin and this under\u00adlines the importance of this sce\u00adne, becau\u00adse it repres\u00adents the climax.<\/p>\n

After\u00adwards Han\u00adnah stands out\u00adside in front of the doctor\u2019s sur\u00adgery. At the end of this page (sce\u00adne 2\/page 8 ) the came\u00adra films her from the high ang\u00adle shot. The came\u00adra zooms out more and more and Han\u00adnah beco\u00admes smal\u00adler and smal\u00adler. This posi\u00adti\u00adon and the rain empha\u00adsi\u00adze her loneli\u00adne\u00adss and despe\u00adra\u00adten\u00adess she feels becau\u00adse of the results. The wea\u00adther is a typi\u00adcal device used in almost every film. It is used to sup\u00adport the fee\u00adlings of the cha\u00adrac\u00adter in cer\u00adtain situations.<\/p>\n

In the kil\u00adling sce\u00adne the view\u00ader can see the shot from Hannah\u2019s per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve (sce\u00adne 3\/page 2\u20133). For the view\u00ader it feels like he is right the\u00adre in the sce\u00adn\u00adery and can here what is going on in her mind, becau\u00adse of the sub\u00adjec\u00adti\u00adve sound. This crea\u00adtes a fee\u00adling of imme\u00addia\u00adcy for the view\u00aders. After the Point-of-view shot the razor bla\u00adde falls down in slow-moti\u00adon. While it is fal\u00adling down Hannah\u2019s memo\u00adries are shown par\u00adal\u00adlel. The slow-moti\u00adon sym\u00adbo\u00adli\u00adzes the last moments in life for Han\u00adnah, which feel like ages, when she looks back on what hap\u00adpen\u00aded and final\u00adly is free.<\/p>\n
