In many cases you have to prac\u00adti\u00adse alo\u00adne, eit\u00adher becau\u00adse you don\u2019t have a part\u00adner or not enough space to real\u00adly dance as a cou\u00adple. Accor\u00addin\u00adgly the num\u00adber of \u201eprac\u00adti\u00adce alo\u00adne at home\u201c les\u00adsons on You\u00adTube has increased in recent months. How do you find good les\u00adsons or in other words: What makes such a les\u00adson good (or rather bad)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing artic\u00adle I will give MY sub\u00adjec\u00adti\u00adve cri\u00adte\u00adria. It\u2019s of cour\u00adse up to you to deci\u00adde whe\u00adther you also find cer\u00adtain aspects important or rather irrele\u00advant. I hope to help stu\u00addents to find good tea\u00adchers, but also to make sug\u00adges\u00adti\u00adons to tea\u00adchers how they could impro\u00adve their lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title and \/ or the descrip\u00adti\u00adon of the video should give a <strong>clear idea of the topic<\/strong>. Moreo\u00adver it is hel\u00adpful if the <strong>level of dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adty<\/strong> is indi\u00adca\u00adted. Espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly for beg\u00adin\u00adners it is frus\u00adt\u00adra\u00adting when they start wat\u00adching \/ prac\u00adti\u00adsing only to find out that the steps \/ tech\u00adni\u00adques are far too dif\u00adfi\u00adcult for them. Of cour\u00adse it is often dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to deci\u00adde whe\u00adther some\u00adthing is easy or dif\u00adfi\u00adcult, becau\u00adse a move\u00adment may be rela\u00adtively easy when you do it slow\u00adly, but beco\u00admes quite dif\u00adfi\u00adcult when you do it in dou\u00adble tem\u00adpo. Howe\u00adver a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon of a turn \/ giro with some adorn\u00adment (like lapiz) is defi\u00adni\u00adte\u00adly advan\u00adced and should be labe\u00adled as&nbsp;such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00adre should be <strong>clear sound and<\/strong> <strong>appro\u00adpria\u00adte volu\u00adme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the begin\u00adning of the les\u00adson the\u00adre should be a <strong>clear over\u00adview<\/strong> <strong>of the les\u00adson<\/strong>. Like in a nor\u00admal les\u00adson the stu\u00addents should be told what they are going to learn \/ prac\u00adti\u00adse: \u201eFirst we are going to \u2026, after that we will \u2026 and finally&nbsp;\u2026&nbsp;\u201e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00adre should be at least <strong>some sort of warm-up<\/strong>. It does\u00adn\u2019t make sen\u00adse for exam\u00adp\u00adle to teach a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon of pivot with lapiz wit\u00adhout revi\u00adsing \/ prac\u00adti\u00adsing pivots first. The mini\u00admum should then be to refer \/ link to a video which covers this tech\u00adni\u00adque. If on the other hand the warm-up is rather long, the\u00adre should be <strong>timestamps<\/strong> in the descrip\u00adti\u00adon so that you can easi\u00adly skip (part of) the warm-up. Even bet\u00adter than are <strong>chap\u00adters<\/strong> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F9WrSM0Q0Fo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in this video<\/a>. They help you to skip parts of the video (in this case e.g. the Warm-up). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pvkTC2xIbeY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This video<\/a> explains how to crea\u00adte&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the intro\u00adduc\u00adto\u00adry exer\u00adci\u00ads\u00ades the\u00adre should be a <strong>demons\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon and expl\u00adana\u00adti\u00adon of the first move\u00adment<\/strong> \/ step \/ figu\u00adre. It\u2019s not a 100% per\u00adcent rule, but in gene\u00adral the view\u00ader should <strong>see the tea\u00adcher first<\/strong> <strong>from behind<\/strong> (and \/ or from the side) and only then from the front. As long as a tea\u00adcher does e.g. only side steps it is easy to copy them, but as soon as things beco\u00adme more com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adted (espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly with turns) it can beco\u00adme extre\u00adme\u00adly hard (espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly for unex\u00adpe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced beg\u00adin\u00adners) to men\u00adtal\u00adly \u201eswitch sides\u201c all the time. For exam\u00adp\u00adle in almost all of her vide\u00ados you see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC8VljvxJBzknk_j0vTIyDtA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanes\u00adsa Gauch<\/a> from behind, which makes copy\u00ading \/ lear\u00adning much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00adre should be <strong>no back\u00adground music<\/strong> during the expl\u00adana\u00adti\u00adon \/ demons\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon of new move\u00adments. I find such \u201emuzak\u201c rather dis\u00adtrac\u00adting. Think of a nor\u00admal les\u00adson: Would\u00adn\u2019t you find it also rather stran\u00adge, if the\u00adre was music play\u00ading during demons\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon \/ expl\u00adana\u00adti\u00adon of some\u00adthing&nbsp;new?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want the tea\u00adcher to <strong>TALK to the view\u00ader<\/strong>. I find it rather stran\u00adge when the who\u00adle com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon is writ\u00adten (like in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7zMzbjJRN5M\" target=\"_blank\">this video<\/a>). First of all it makes the who\u00adle les\u00adson rather imper\u00adso\u00adnal, second\u00adly it makes prac\u00adti\u00adsing much har\u00adder becau\u00adse you have to come clo\u00adse to your lap\u00adtop \/ tablet \/ PC in order to read the ins\u00adtruc\u00adtions. White text on a white \/ light back\u00adground (wall, curtain etc.) makes it even har\u00adder. (Text is of cour\u00adse ok when you trans\u00adla\u00adte your ins\u00adtruc\u00adtions into ano\u00adther language.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A basic rule for tea\u00adching any kind of (more com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adted) move\u00adment when you face your audi\u00adence is that you pre\u00adsent a \u201e<strong>mir\u00adror image<\/strong>\u201c, i.e. you say for exam\u00adp\u00adle \u201ePut your weight on your RIGHT foot\u201c but you put in on your LEFT, so that for the stu\u00addent \/ view\u00ader it is the same side and they don\u2019t have to turn ever\u00ady\u00adthing in their&nbsp;head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After show\u00ading and explai\u00adning the cor\u00adrect move\u00adment, the\u00adre should be a <strong>descrip\u00adti\u00adon of the most com\u00admon mista\u00adkes<\/strong>. Howe\u00adver espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly at the begin\u00adning the tea\u00adcher should only men\u00adti\u00adon the two or three most important mista\u00adkes. Only after some prac\u00adti\u00adce and expe\u00adri\u00adence with the move\u00adment should come finer details. Many tea\u00adchers make the mista\u00adke of \u201emista\u00adke \/ infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon over\u00adload\u201c, i.e. poin\u00adting out too many pos\u00adsi\u00adble mista\u00adkes, befo\u00adre the stu\u00addent has even tried out the move\u00adment. Noo\u00adne can pay atten\u00adti\u00adon to five dif\u00adfe\u00adrent things at the same&nbsp;time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addi\u00adti\u00adon to just demons\u00adt\u00adra\u00adting and describ\u00ading mista\u00adkes it may help to <strong>visua\u00adli\u00adze<\/strong> <strong>mista\u00adkes<\/strong> e.g. with lines, arrows or a side by side demons\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sM0jKpNAtWM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this video by Vanes\u00adsa Gauch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\u00adever move\u00adments or mista\u00adkes are demons\u00adtra\u00adted \/ explai\u00adned the <strong>use of dif\u00adfe\u00adrent came\u00adra angles and distances<\/strong> can help. When you want to show for exam\u00adp\u00adle how the upper body turns a high ang\u00adle can illus\u00adtra\u00adte your point (like <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xhbo2oStEgQ?t=44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in this video<\/a>). Like\u00adwi\u00adse when you talk for exam\u00adp\u00adle about the wrong posi\u00adti\u00adon of the foot, a clo\u00adse-up can be helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step should be a <strong>rhyth\u00admi\u00adcal prac\u00adti\u00adce of the new move\u00adment<\/strong>. The rhythm \/ beat may be pro\u00advi\u00added by a metro\u00adno\u00adme or by music. My ide\u00adal would be a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon of both: First 8 or 16 times to a metro\u00adno\u00adme and then again 16 times to music. That would auto\u00adma\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly help peo\u00adp\u00adle to dance <em>to the music<\/em>. That is why I find very irri\u00adta\u00adting when tea\u00adchers show \/ \u201edance\u201c a sequence and their steps don\u2019t fit the (back\u00adground) music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In gene\u00adral you should <strong>prac\u00adti\u00adse a move\u00adment on both sides<\/strong>. Far too many dancers have a \u201estrong\u201c and a \u201eweak\u201c side and can do cer\u00adtain figu\u00adres (like the sand\u00adwich) only on one side. This limits their dancing severely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the remai\u00adning video the\u00adre should be a <strong>clear, logi\u00adcal pro\u00adgres\u00adsi\u00adon<\/strong> of move\u00adments from easy to com\u00adplex and \/ or from slow to fast. Even if you teach dif\u00adfe\u00adrent move\u00adments \/ steps they should somehow be con\u00adnec\u00adted, e.g. becau\u00adse they are com\u00adbi\u00adned at the end of the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Final\u00adly I find it very moti\u00advat\u00ading to watch some <strong>typi\u00adcal situa\u00adtions<\/strong> in which the steps \/ the figu\u00adre that was taught befo\u00adre could be danced \/ appli\u00aded. For exam\u00adp\u00adle after prac\u00adti\u00adsing <em>enros\u00adques<\/em> I\u2019d like to get at least some idea, in which situation(s) I could use \/ dance them.
