If stu\u00addents speak more cor\u00adrect\u00adly as time goes by, is this becau\u00adse of our tea\u00adching, or would they have got bet\u00adter any\u00adway? Rese\u00adarch on metho\u00addo\u00adlo\u00adgy is incon\u00adclu\u00adsi\u00adve, and has not shown detec\u00adta\u00adble and las\u00adting effects, for ins\u00adtance, for impli\u00adcit ver\u00adsus expli\u00adcit ins\u00adtruc\u00adtion, for induc\u00adti\u00adve ver\u00adsus deduc\u00adti\u00adve lear\u00adning, or for sepa\u00adra\u00adted-out stu\u00addy of struc\u00adtu\u00adre ver\u00adsus inci\u00adden\u00adtal focus on form during com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adti\u00adve acti\u00advi\u00adty. Under\u00adstan\u00add\u00ada\u00adb\u00adly, tea\u00adchers are unsu\u00adre how much importance they should give to grammar, what grammar they should teach, and how they should teach it.
