Es ent\u00adstand im Rah\u00admen einer Unter\u00adrichts\u00adein\u00adheit Lyrik, in deren Ver\u00adlauf die wich\u00adtigs\u00adten Stil\u00admit\u00adtel bespro\u00adchen und anhand von Bei\u00adspie\u00adlen (u.a. Shakespeare\u2019s Sonet\u00adten) ge\u00fcbt wor\u00adden waren. Die Haus\u00adauf\u00adga\u00adbe lau\u00adte\u00adte: \u201eWri\u00adte an old-fashio\u00adned love let\u00adter with a lot of simi\u00adles and meta\u00adphors.\u201c Obwohl eigent\u00adlich nur ein Pro\u00adsa\u00adtext ver\u00adlangt war, ver\u00adsuch\u00adte sich Car\u00admen an einem \u201eklas\u00adsi\u00adschen\u201c Lie\u00adbes\u00adge\u00addicht. Als Zei\u00adchen der Aner\u00adken\u00adnung habe ich ihr Gedicht in Hin\u00adblick auf die Funk\u00adtio\u00adna\u00adli\u00adsie\u00adrung der Stil\u00admit\u00adtel in einem Bei\u00adtrag f\u00fcr die Sch\u00fc\u00adler\u00adzei\u00adtung analysiert.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You are my force, my colourful fire<br>\nYou give me the warmth that I&nbsp;need<br>\nAnd the glow you cau\u00adse, leads to desire<br>\nAnd I\u2019m abla\u00adze with&nbsp;heat.<\/p>\n<p>You are my strength, my solid&nbsp;earth<br>\nYou give me the ground to&nbsp;stand<br>\nA fer\u00adti\u00adle soil, a sod that gives&nbsp;birth<br>\nTo our love that will never&nbsp;end.<\/p>\n<p>Even an unex\u00adpe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adced rea\u00adder quick\u00adly beco\u00admes awa\u00adre that this poem has got a cer\u00adtain \u201cmusi\u00adcal\u201d qua\u00adli\u00adty. The fact that it sim\u00adply sounds \u201cgood\u201d is cau\u00adsed by quite a num\u00adber of sty\u00adli\u00adstic devices that all have to do with&nbsp;sound.<\/p>\n<p>One well-known tech\u00adni\u00adque of rela\u00adting cer\u00adtain words with the help of sound is alli\u00adte\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon. Alre\u00ada\u00addy in the first line \u2018force\u2019 and \u2018fire\u2019 (tog\u00ade\u00adther with \u2018colourful\u2019) are thus lin\u00adked acou\u00adsti\u00adcal\u00adly. This link empha\u00adsi\u00adzes the fact that fire is regard\u00aded by the spea\u00adk\u00ader as a posi\u00adti\u00adve force, i.e. some\u00adthing that helps us to live and sur\u00advi\u00adve e.g. by kee\u00adping us warm or enab\u00adling us to cook food. Fire in this con\u00adtext the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre doesn\u2019t have the com\u00admon, nega\u00adti\u00adve con\u00adno\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons of \u2018bur\u00adning\u2019, \u2018des\u00adtroy\u00ading\u2019 and \u2018kil\u00adling\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The tech\u00adni\u00adque of lin\u00adking rela\u00adted words acou\u00adsti\u00adcal\u00adly beco\u00admes even more obvious in the second stan\u00adza, which is domi\u00adna\u00adted by the \u2018s\u2019-sound in \u2018strength\u2019, \u2018solid\u2019, \u2018stand\u2019, \u2018soil\u2019 and \u2018sod\u2019. An even clo\u00adser rela\u00adti\u00adonship exists bet\u00adween \u2018strength\u2019 and \u2018stand\u2019 (it takes strength to stand) and \u2018solid\u2019 and \u2018sod\u2019 (\u2018solid\u2019 is here a kind of syn\u00adonym for \u2018strong\u2019, i.e. a pie\u00adce of earth\/ground gives \u2018strength\u2019 and makes it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to \u2018stand\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>Ano\u00adther acou\u00adstic link is estab\u00adlished by the iden\u00adti\u00adcal vowel sound in \u2018fer\u00adti\u00adle\u2019 and \u2018birth\u2019. This asso\u00adnan\u00adce empha\u00adsi\u00adzes the clo\u00adse rela\u00adti\u00adon bet\u00adween tho\u00adse two words, i.e. a \u2018fer\u00adti\u00adle\u2019 soil is one that \u2018gives birth\u2019 to a lot of grain like e.g.&nbsp;wheat.<\/p>\n<p>Whe\u00adre\u00adas asso\u00adnan\u00adce refers to the repe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon of vowel sounds within words, con\u00adso\u00adnan\u00adce means the repe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon of con\u00adso\u00adnant sounds espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly at the end of words. In the second stan\u00adza \u2018strength\u2019, \u2018earth\u2019 and \u2018birth\u2019 are thus lin\u00adked with each other (also \u2018warmth\u2019 in the first stan\u00adza belongs to tho\u00adse words). Again this con\u00adnec\u00adtion makes per\u00adfect sen\u00adse becau\u00adse all three (or four) words descri\u00adbe what the addres\u00adsee means for the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>A last device that is based on sound is rhy\u00adme. In the first stan\u00adza \u2018fire\u2019 and \u2018desi\u00adre\u2019, in the second \u2018earth\u2019 and \u2018birth\u2019 are thus rela\u00adted. Desi\u00adre is often descri\u00adbed as the \u201cfire in the heart\u201d (= \u201dmy heart is bur\u00adning\u201d); the acou\u00adstic simi\u00adla\u00adri\u00adty of \u2018earth\u2019 and \u2018birth\u2019 evo\u00adkes the image of \u201cMother Earth\u201d (or \u201cMother Natu\u00adre\u201d), i.e. that the earth is a mother that gives birth to child\u00adren (= peo\u00adp\u00adle) and cares for them e.g. by pro\u00advi\u00adding food and shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Con\u00adside\u00adring the meta\u00adphors of the two stanz\u00adas one quick\u00adly rea\u00adli\u00adzes that the images are tight\u00adly inter\u00adwo\u00adven. In the first stan\u00adza the\u00adre are \u2018fire\u2019, \u2018warmth\u2019, \u2018glow\u2019, \u2018abla\u00adze\u2019 and \u2018heat\u2019, which are arran\u00adged in a cli\u00adma\u00adc\u00adtic order. \u2018Fire\u2019 is, so to speak, the ori\u00adgin; the words beco\u00adme step by step \u201dhot\u00adter\u201d, the imagery and thus the speaker\u2019s emo\u00adti\u00adon beco\u00admes con\u00adstant\u00adly more inten\u00adse. This deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment of images is beau\u00adtiful\u00adly balan\u00adced by \u2018earth\u2019, \u2018ground\u2019, \u2018soil\u2019 and \u2018sod\u2019 in the second stan\u00adza. Here the rather vague and gene\u00adral word \u2018earth\u2019 deve\u00adlo\u00adps to some\u00adthing very con\u00adcre\u00adte, name\u00adly a \u2018sod\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Ano\u00adther fea\u00adture that adds to the \u201dmusi\u00adcal\u201d qua\u00adli\u00adties of the poem is its rythm. In poet\u00adry rythm is main\u00adly estab\u00adlished with the help of met\u00adre, i.e. a regu\u00adlar pat\u00adtern of stres\u00adsed and unstres\u00adsed syll\u00adables. In the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing a stres\u00adsed syllable is repre\u00adsen\u00adted by the sym\u00adbol \u2018x\u2019, an unstres\u00adsed syllable by&nbsp;\u2018-\u2019:<\/p>\n<p>1) \u2013 - x, \u2013 x \u2013 -&nbsp;x<br>\n\u2013 x \u2013 - x \u2013 -&nbsp;x<br>\n\u2013 x \u2013 x, x \u2013 \u2011x<br>\n\u2013 x \u2013 - x \u2013&nbsp;x<\/p>\n<p>2) \u2013 - x, \u2013 x \u2013&nbsp;x<br>\n\u2013 x \u2013 - x \u2013&nbsp;x<br>\n\u2013 x \u2013 x, \u2013 x \u2013 -&nbsp;x<br>\n\u2013 - x \u2013 - x \u2013&nbsp;x<\/p>\n<p>As can be seen from the abo\u00adve ana\u00adly\u00adsis the first and third line of each stan\u00adza has four stres\u00adsed syll\u00adables, whe\u00adre\u00adas the second and fourth line each have only three. Ana\u00adpe\u00adstic feet (- \u2013 x) skilful\u00adly vary with iam\u00adbic feet (- x). The result is one of the most dif\u00adfi\u00adcult things in poet\u00adry: a fixed pat\u00adtern which nevert\u00adhel\u00adess doesn\u2019t beco\u00adme monotonous.<\/p>\n<p>The cohe\u00adsi\u00adon that is estab\u00adlished by the met\u00adre is also reflec\u00adted on the syn\u00adtac\u00adti\u00adcal level. The first two lines of each stan\u00adza begin with exact\u00adly the same words name\u00adly \u201dYou are my \u2026\u201d and \u201dYou give me the \u2026\u201d. This spe\u00adci\u00adfic case of a par\u00adal\u00adlel struc\u00adtu\u00adre is cal\u00adled ana\u00adpho\u00adra. Other par\u00adal\u00adle\u00adlisms are the third and fourth line of the first stan\u00adza (\u201dAnd \u2026\u201d \u2013 \u201dAnd \u2026\u201d) and the third line of the second stanza.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as one remem\u00adbers that \u2018Petros\u2019 in Greek means \u2018rock\u2019 (= solid earth) and that Jesus said to Petrus \u201dYou are the rock I can build (my church) on\u201d, one beco\u00admes awa\u00adre of the cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00adding allu\u00adsi\u00adon at the begin\u00adning of the second stan\u00adza. By allu\u00adding to the Bible the speaker\u2019s love is \u201dlifted\u201d into some kind of reli\u00adgious or spi\u00adri\u00adtu\u00adal dimen\u00adsi\u00adon. As this is the final stan\u00adza of the poem this device thus unders\u00adcores the speaker\u2019s strong fee\u00adlings of&nbsp;love.<\/p>\n<p>The who\u00adle poem ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly con\u00adsists of four stanz\u00adas, each of which is dedi\u00adca\u00adted to one of the four ele\u00adments. This first stan\u00adza deals with air, the second with water, the third with fire and the fourth with earth. This arran\u00adge\u00adment again gives the who\u00adle poem a defi\u00adni\u00adte cohe\u00adsi\u00adon, at the same time it achie\u00adves an aes\u00adthe\u00adtic effect with the help of chi\u00adas\u00admus becau\u00adse the first and the fourth and the two \u201dmidd\u00adle\u201d stanz\u00adas cor\u00adre\u00adspond with each&nbsp;other.<\/p>\n<p>All in all this poem beau\u00adtiful\u00adly pro\u00adves how \u2014 in good poet\u00adry \u2014 con\u00adtents (i.e. what is said) and form (i.e. how is it said) are clo\u00adse\u00adly inter\u00adre\u00adla\u00adted, or, in other words, that form apart from its purely aes\u00adthe\u00adtic func\u00adtion (i.e. to give plea\u00adsu\u00adre) has got a defi\u00adni\u00adte func\u00adtion and helps to make tho\u00adse eight lines a genui\u00adne litt\u00adle work of&nbsp;art.<\/p>\n<p><small>PS.
